- The ZZ Zamioculcas ‘Black Queen’ (Zamioculcas zamiifolia ‘Raven’ or ‘Dowon’) is a rare and highly sought-after cultivar of the popular ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). It is a rhizomatous perennial, meaning it grows from thick, potato-like underground tubers (rhizomes) that store water, making the plant incredibly drought-tolerant. Its stems feature glossy, feathered leaflets, giving it a sleek, structural appearance.
The plant’s most captivating feature is its color-changing foliage. New shoots emerge a vibrant, almost neon lime green, then slowly transition over several weeks to a dramatic, glossy purple-black or “jet black” as the leaves fully mature.
- This plant thrives in medium to bright, indirect light, which promotes a deep black color. It is famously tolerant of very low light, but growth will be slower.
